Canada loses its measles elimination status

The Public Health Agency of Canada says the Pan American Health Organization confirmed that Canada no longer holds measles elimination status after the same strain spread for more than a year. The outbreak began in October 2024 and reached several provinces and territories, largely in under-vaccinated communities. Canada can regain the status once transmission of that strain is interrupted for at least 12 months.

The Canadian Institute for Health Information says longer emergency stays reflect pressure outside the department as well as inside it. In 2024–2025, half of patients waited just under two hours for a physician assessment, and one in ten waited more than six hours. For patients admitted from the emergency department, waiting for an inpatient bed accounted for nearly two-thirds of the stay. People designated alternate level of care remained in hospital a median of 44 days while waiting for community supports.
