Manitoba declares a public health emergency over HIV

Manitoba Health, Seniors and Long-Term Care says new HIV cases rose to 328 in 2025 from 90 in 2019. The province’s 2024 rate was 19.5 cases per 100,000 people, against a national rate of 5.5. Officials are launching an HIV Response Steering Committee. More than half of cases are among females, and the province says the most common routes of spread are injection drug use and unprotected heterosexual sex.
